Futsal Bees go down valiantly in a double-header

Brentford FC’s Futsal team were required to play another double-header at The Guildford Spectrum on Wednesday 7February in The EFLT Futsal South East Championship.

The squad only had 5 players available for the five-a-side format league, and this was going to require an immense effort from the Futsal Bees – who played against Southampton and Southend United.

In game one, students from Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College played a diamond defence to preserve energy and to try and catch the opposition out on the counter-attack. For the first ten minutes this worked well, but the Saints scholars went into the lead when a low driven shot took a deflection to beat the Bees keeper.

Brentford were back on level terms when Yaya Abdurahman finished from 3 metres out.

Both team were creating chances but the south coast team retook the lead – resulting from a corner, which was smashed in from 12 metres.

After the interval, Brentford could not convert their chances with Southampton scoring two more goals – making the final score 4-1.

Game two – against Southend – was a 7-goal thriller. With 20 minutes to recover, the Bees started well, but again it was the opposition who took the lead. Shakir put Brentford back on level terms after 8 minutes yet the Bees then went behind again. Straight after the half-time break, the west Londoners equalised by Abdurahman, and then got themselves in front when Mustafa Nishat finished off a sweeping 7-pass counter-attack from 3 metres out.

Leading 3-2, with 6 minutes to go, the fatigue really started to kick in for Brentford’s tiring players. Southend equalised with 2 minutes to go. Agonisingly, in the last minute, the Shrimpers pivot, turned and unleashed a shot, which beat the keeper to leave the Bees pointless.

Afterwards, Bees’ Head Coach, Luis Melville commented:

“To go into a double-header with only 5 players is a very difficult proposition, but I can only admire the players today with how they coped with the physical work load.

“They may be disappointed with the results, particularly against Southend, but they should not be disappointed in their performances. As a group, we learned a lot today about resilience.”

Next up for the Futsal Bees is the return game against Southend United on Wednesday 28 February.
