Trust participants join Brentford FC Women for International Women’s Day
Bees beat Sport London e Benfica in front of more than 1,000 in honour of International Womens Day
Brentford FC Women’s First Team claimed a comprehensive 7-2 victory against Sport London e Benfica in front of a record-breaking crowd. An attendance of 1,010 was at Bedfont Sports Ground on Sunday 6 March, to watch The Bees pick up a fine win.
Participants from our Community Engagement Premier League Kicks and London Marathon Charitable Trust sessions had the chance to do the guard of honour for the women’s team as they made their way out onto the pitch in front of the record crowd. An experience none of the girls will forget anytime soon as they continue their own footballing development hoping to aspire to the level of the women’s team.
Not only did the girls from our Community Engagement sessions get to do the guard of honour but, they joined participants from our Girls Football Development Centre in taking part in a penalty shootout at halftime showing off their finishing from the penalty spot.
Amber Lloyd Brentford Women’s first team defender and our head of female football development shared her thoughts on the day “What a day to be a part of, breaking records and showing everyone that we are worth watching. It was great to see so many young female fans at the game and being involved in the match day, penalties, mascots and as guards of honour. I am extremely proud to work for and play for this club, you could see how much Sunday meant to everyone involved in the day. Thank you to all the fans that came down to support, we hope you enjoyed it and I really hope to see you at a home fixture soon”
The three points mean that Brentford go top of the London and South East Regional Women’s Division One North table. The Bees are three points ahead of both Sutton United and Dorking Wanderers respectively, although both sides have games in hand on The Bees. Head Coach Karleigh Osborne was ecstatic with his side’s performance and delighted for the Club on a historic day.
Karleigh said: “It’s fantastic. What a day! I’m super proud of the team and every single person who was involved in getting this spectacle organised. I know Amy Crook has worked extremely hard on attracting the biggest crowd in the women’s history and it was a wonderful experience; capped off by a wonderful win.”
We wanted to congratulate the team on a fantastic win and also thank them for allowing some of our participants to be involved in the International Women’s Day festivities.
