Brentford Volunteer is Runner Up at the Ealing Sports Awards

Karol Filipczak, who has supported a number of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, won ‘highly commended’ in the ‘Adult Volunteer of the Year’ category at the Ealing Sports Awards.

The awards, which was held on Thursday 12 July at William Perkin Church of England High School in Greenford, recognised the talents and achievements of Ealing’s multitude of sports clubs, inspirational volunteers and fantastic sporting individuals.

Karol’s recognition derives from not being a ‘traditional’ sports coach. Instead, he has mentored young people who might be physically inactive, on the edge of care or who might have a physical disability. He has volunteered for a number of community projects that Brentford FC Community Sports Trust run – supporting countless young people across Ealing.

Commenting on his nomination, Karol said:

“I feel amazing and it touches my heart to be able to be recognised for performing work that helps those around us in our community, which might not mean a lot to some but the world to others.”

Being a type I diabetic means Karol knows first-hand the difficulties young people face. Yet instead of it becoming a negative part of his life Karol has channelled his own adversity into helping others.

Karmen Blake, Mentoring Manager at Brentford FC Community Sports Trust, has mentored Karol through his volunteering journey, she said:

“Karol has been a breath of fresh air to work with; he has been such a positive role model for the young people we work with and has made such a difference to their lives.

“The world needs more people like Karol!”

The awards were hosted by Sky Sports presenter Marcus Buckland with special guests Brinn Bevan, 2018 Senior British Champion and Olympic Artistic Gymnast.

“Congratulations to all the athletes, clubs and volunteers shortlisted for this year’s Awards.

This year’s shortlist recognises coaches and volunteers making a huge difference, aspiring athletes of all ages and grass roots clubs doing amazing work to encourage people to get involved in sport, stay active and healthy.”
