Trust participants become mascots as Bees cruise to victory over Watford Ladies FC

Girls only Trust participants get the chance to walk out with the team and take part in a half time penalty shootout! 

Last Sunday Brentford FC Women’s took on Watford Ladies FC and some of our girls-only community engagement participants from our funded London Marathon Charitable Trust sessions had the opportunity to become mascots walking out with the team before kick-off, before watching a dominant first half where Brentford went into halftime 1-0 up. The opening goal came around 35 minutes in and was the result of a corner, which saw Sophie Troth crossing the ball in the opposing keeper failing to claim and Axelle Courlander rising the highest and heading into a vacated net.

The participants were invited onto the pitch at halftime to take part in a penalty shootout which saw a lot more goals than saves and had all spectators in attendance cheering every shot and questioning the goalkeepers’ credentials.

The second half started in the same dominant manner with Brentford controlling the play and when presented with an opportunity doubling their lead after Sophie Troph’s shot was parried by Watford’s keeper right into the path of Rebekah Edwards who slammed home the rebound.

Shortly after that, the home side made it 3-0, all but ending the game as a contest. It was great work down the left as fullback Chloe Webb made a fantastic overlapping run before delivering a quality ball to the back post. Edwards found herself all alone and calmly headed the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

With five minutes to go, Watford snatched a consolation goal, yet there was some controversy surrounding whether or not the ball crossed the line. With protests from the Brentford players being batted off by the referee, this was a slight blemish on an otherwise perfect afternoon for The Bees.

Amber Lloyd Brentford’s centre back and one of our senior coach’s at the Trust said ‘Coaching these girls on a weekly basis makes me so proud. I am so glad they were able to come down, watch and be involved in yesterday’s win! Moments like this, seeing their smiles and hearing them cheer makes all the long stressful days worthwhile’.

Brentford’s next test is in The Vitality Women’s FA Cup when they face Abingdon United in the Second Qualifying Round at Bedfont Sports Ground. That’s next Sunday, 3rd October, in West London.
