Success at the Trust’s Summer Sports Party for children with disabilities

In News, Sports For Children With Disabilities

Badminton, table tennis and rounders were just some of the activities offer at the Trust’s Summer Sports Party for children with disabilities last week. The party saw more than 50 children and their families benefit from a range of free sporting activities as they basked in the August sunshine at Lampton Sports Centre in Hounslow. And to the delight of the children involved, B-Team players Japhet Sery Larson and Matej Majka joined in with the activities along with Brentford’s mascot Buzz bee.

The children who attended are involved in the Trust’s Short Breaks project, which supports children with disabilities through free sporting activities. The project, which is commissioned by Hounslow Council, runs on a weekly basis and provides much-needed respite for the parents of the children involved.

Mum-of four Charlotte has certainly felt the benefits of the project. Her daughters have attended the sessions for the past year.

She said: “Short Breaks provides a safe social environment with staff who understand the needs of my children. I have told everyone I know about this amazing project – it shows how a football club can help make sport available and accessible to all.”

The project, now in its sixth year, has already yielded successful results; last year 190 children in Hounslow benefited from the initiative.

Chris Tribe, Disabilities Manager at the Trust, believes the event has an important purpose for the children involved.

He said: “The Short Breaks Summer Sports Party is one of our flagship events; we invited participants and their families to have a go at a wide range sports on the day, some of which they may never have tried before.

“We were lucky enough to have two B-Team players and Buzz Bee also join us, to help create a party atmosphere.”
