What we would like you to do

Look through your bookshelves at home and sort out the books that you no longer read and would like to pass on to another child who may not have any books at home and bring them along the next time you drop your child off for training or are just passing through Gunnersbury Park!

Deposit boxes for your unwanted books will be made available from 23rd April until May 7th at

– Gunnersbury Park Sports Hub, by the 3G pitches

– Outside the Brentford FC Superstore, TW8 9QR

What does the Children’s Book Project do?

The Children’s Book Project takes donated books that children have outgrown (and parents are very keen to give away) and gifts them to children who have few, if any, of their own.

The project mainly gives books away through primary schools, targeting those with 25% or more on free school meals, which means that households have incomes of less than £7,500 a year.

In reality, last year over 50% of the children the project gave to were on free school meals and there are 850 schools in London alone which qualify to receive books from the project.

The Children’s Book Project also give to women’s refuges, newly arrived Afghan refugee groups living in hotels, food banks and through prison family liaison. This year they aim to give away over 250,000 books and we want to increase that number to 1,000,000 in 3 years.

What impact does it have?

In the UK 1 in 10 children from low-income households own no books of their own. Children’s Book Project understand that book ownership has a direct impact on children’s literacy, such that there is a one year gap between children from book rich households and those with no books by the time they leave primary school.
